October 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

October brings several important tax deadlines for individuals. Whether you are finalizing an extended 2025 individual income tax return, reporting foreign financial accounts, or managing tip income, it is essential to stay compliant. At Midwest Tax Resolution, LLC, our goal is to provide clarity and relieve the stress of tax season. Here is a straightforward breakdown of the deadlines you need to know this month.

October 13: Reporting Tip Income to Your Employer

If you are an employee who works for tips and received more than $20 in tips during September, you are required to report those earnings to your employer no later than October 13. You can submit this information using IRS Form 4070 or by providing your own signed statement.

If you choose to write your own statement, it must include your name, address, and Social Security number; your employer's name (or the establishment's name if different) and address; the month or period the report covers; and the total tips you received during that timeframe.

Your employer is required to use this report to withhold FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. If your standard wages are not enough to cover these withholdings, the employer will report the uncollected amount in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will then be required to pay that uncollected withholding when you file your annual tax return.

October 15: Individual Extended Tax Returns

If you requested an automatic 6-month extension to file your 2025 income tax return, October 15 is your final due date. By this day, you must file Form 1040 and pay any remaining tax, interest, and penalties due. For taxpayers who are behind on filings or struggling with tax debt, reaching out to a professional tax representation team can help bring you back into compliance and stop further collection actions.

October 15: Reporting Foreign Financial Interests

Taxpayers with foreign financial interests also face a mid-month deadline. If you received an automatic 6-month extension of time to report your 2025 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, October 15 is the due date for Form FinCEN 114.

Navigating tax deadlines can sometimes be impacted by the calendar or unforeseen geographic events. If a standard due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically extended to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

Additionally, when a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, filing and payment due dates will be extended. To verify whether an area has been designated as a disaster area and to check for specific filing extension dates, visit the following websites:
