Navigating June 2026 Individual Tax Deadlines: Estimates, Expats, and Extensions

As summer approaches in Carmel, Indiana, and across the Midwest, it is easy to let your tax obligations slip to the back of your mind. However, staying proactive and maintaining compliance is the single most effective way to prevent stressful IRS collection actions down the road. Whether you are a self-employed business owner, an expatriate, or someone simply trying to catch up on unfiled returns, staying aware of upcoming deadlines is critical.

This month's tax calendar highlights several important June 2026 deadlines, including estimated tax payments, tip reporting requirements, IRA reporting obligations, and specific filing extensions for taxpayers living abroad.

June 15: Second Quarter Estimated Tax Payments

The United States tax system operates on a "pay-as-you-earn" framework. For self-employed individuals, business owners, and those with significant non-wage income (such as large investment gains or property sales), this means making quarterly estimated tax payments. June 15 is the last day to timely make your second quarter estimated tax installment for the 2026 tax year.

Failing to prepay a minimum safe harbor amount can trigger an underpayment penalty, which is calculated quarter-by-quarter based on the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points. Fortunately, federal tax law provides safe harbors to help you avoid these penalties. If your underpayment is less than $1,000, no penalty is assessed. Otherwise, you can rely on one of two safe harbors:

  • Current Year Safe Harbor: If your payments equal or exceed 90% of your current year's tax liability, you avoid the penalty.
  • Prior Year Safe Harbor: If your payments equal 100% of your preceding year's tax liability (or 110% if your Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $150,000, or $75,000 for married filing separately), you are protected.

Keep in mind that state tax authorities often have different safe harbor rules and dates. If your income has suddenly spiked this year, recalculating your estimates now can save you from a steep penalty later.

June 15: Deadlines for U.S. Expats and Military Personnel

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico, June 15 is your deadline to file your 2025 income tax return and pay any tax due. If you need more time, you can file Form 4868 to secure an additional four months (until October 15) to file. However, this is strictly an extension to file, not an extension to pay. If you owe taxes, you must estimate and pay them by June 15 to avoid late payment penalties and interest.

Special extensions apply in specific circumstances:

  • Terrorist Attacks in Israel: Those impacted by the attacks throughout 2024 and 2025 have until September 30, 2026, to file and pay taxes otherwise due on or after September 30, 2025, and before September 30, 2026.
  • Combat Zones: Military personnel in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty area receive an automatic 180-day extension after leaving the zone, plus the number of days left to file when they originally entered the zone.

June 1 & June 10: IRA Valuations and Tip Reporting

For individuals over age 73 managing retirement distributions, June 1 is the final due date for IRA trustees to issue Form 5498. This form provides the fair market value of your IRA as of December 31, 2025, which is necessary to calculate your required minimum distribution (RMD) for 2026.

Additionally, employees who receive more than $20 in tips during May must report those tips to their employer by June 10. Your employer will then withhold the necessary FICA and income taxes. If your regular wages cannot cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will be reported on your W-2, and you will be responsible for paying it when you file your return.

Disaster Area Extensions and Scheduling Nuances

As a general rule, if a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically shifts to the next business day. Additionally, taxpayers residing in federally declared disaster areas frequently receive extended tax deadlines. To verify if your area qualifies for relief, you can consult the following resources:
